Schelert & Company Inc. P.S. was founded in 1984 to provide professional services to the Yakima Valley. David D. Schelert, CPA founded the firm and is still a practicing CPA today. Throughout the years the business has grown and changed but remains focused on providing the personalized professional services that Mr. Schelert has provided to both businesses and individuals in the Yakima Valley for the past 35 years. David D. Schelert, CPA – CPA, Shareholder
David, as the founder of Schelert and Company Inc., and having been born and raised in the Yakima Valley on a farm is dedicated to keeping an accounting practice in Zillah to serve our local communities in Yakima County: Zillah, Toppenish, and Granger with an emphasis on agriculture and small business.
David spent most of his formative years in Toppenish on a farm, participating in 4-H and FFA and after graduating from Toppenish High School went on to Central Washington University in Ellensburg where he earned his Bachelors Degree in Accounting, and then passed the Certified Public Accountants and was admitted the Washington State Board of Accountancy on October 28th, 1983.
40 years later he handed the reins of the company to Ellery Kabina, CPA/ABV and Bryan Funk, CPA/MST who are owner shareholders of the firm. When he isn’t in the office David is off to his house on the lake in Idaho with his wife TJ and their dogs, going to and supporting local community events, or otherwise enjoying the free time his hard work has earned him.
One of his life’s passions is supporting others by supporting CWU Scholarship Foundations, 4-H and FFA projects at the CWJLS, University of Washington Men's Health, and Institute for Prostate Cancer Research.

Ellery J. Kabina, CPA/ABV – CPA, Shareholder
Ellery J. Kabina, CPA/ABV joined the firm in December of 2017 while finishing his university education. He graduated from Central Washington University with a bachelor’s degree in 2018, double majoring in Accounting and Finance. He obtained his CPA license in May of 2019 and then went on to obtain his Accreditation in Business Valuation (ABV).
Now, as one of three owners in the firm, he works with all members of the team to provide excellent accounting & advisory services to the firm’s clients. He is actively involved with the Freemasons, Shriners, multiple scholarship funds and other charitable organizations in the valley. When he's not in the office he can be found on one of the many golf courses in the valley or simply enjoying a day off with his wife and child.
Bryan J. Funk, CPA/MST – CPA, Shareholder
Bryan J Funk accepted a position with Schelert & Company Inc. P.S., in 2015 while he was still in High School, and while working at Schelert & Company received his Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting from Washington State University in December 2018. Bryan went on to receive his Master of Science Degree in Taxation through Golden Gate University in December 2020.
Bryan was raised on a family farm and enjoys the business of agriculture and its supporting industries. Bryan is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Washington Society of Certified Public Accountants.

Gage L. Eshleman – Staff Accountant
Gage Eshleman joined the firm in June of 2020 during his time at Yakima Valley College, he would later transfer to Central Washington University and graduate with his bachelor's degree in accounting in August of 2022. He is currently pursuing master’s degree in professional accountancy at CWU while simultaneously studying for the CPA exams which he intends to complete in 2024. When he is not in the office or at home studying, you can find him hanging around with friends and family, or just taking a day to himself.
Barbara A. Trego – Bookkeeping & Payroll Specialist
Barbara Trego has been a resident of Zillah most of her life. She joined the team of Schelert and Company Inc in July of 2017. She began as a familiar face at the front desk doing reception and light bookkeeping when needed. She is now working for the team doing bookkeeping and payroll. She is the mother of 5 and has 8 grandkids that she enjoys spending time with on the weekends. She is also heavily involved in her church where she does office work and leads the worship services with her daughters on Sunday mornings. When she is not spending time with her family or church, you might find her out at various venues in the valley singing with two of her daughters in their band.

Jill Wertenberger – Administrative Assistant Lead
Jill Wertenberger has been with Schelert & Company for 18 years. You can find her at the front desk greeting clients and answering incoming calls to receiving client correspondence to a variety of clerical tasks. Jill was raised on a farm south of Harrah where her family grew a variety of different crops. Wheat, corn, peppermint and even sugar beets were just a few. Continuing the family farming tradition jill and her husband Kevin raised their 2 children on his family fruit ranch. Where today they grow apples, pears, and wine grapes. Her love of antiques has her treasure hunting on the weekends.
Courtnie C. Valdez – Administrative Assistant & Bookkeeper
Courtnie Valdez joined Schelert & Company in June of 2020. She had recently graduated high school in 2019, and was working at a local restaurant, when she was asked to join the firm as a part time receptionist. In the summer of 2022, Courtnie was offered a full-time position at the office. She now works as an Administrative Assistant and Bookkeeper. On the weekends, you might find her singing at one of the local wineries or other music venues in the valley joined by her mom, sister, and friends in their band: XYZ and the Boomers. If she’s not performing, she simply enjoys spending time with her husband and family.
